Google Maps Scavenger Hunt

Objective

To create a curriculum based scavenger hunt using Google Maps

Directions

Before you create a scavenger hunt learn to use Google Maps effectively. Google has an extensive searchable database of maps that span the globe. Many locations also have satellite images and some major cities also have street view.

Part One Search the map and use satellite view
  1. Go to www.google.com and click on maps
  2. Search: panther path, point pleasant NJ
  3. On the Map click “satellite” to see an actual image
  4. Use the zoom tool to zoom in on the High School.
  5. Search your home address and locate your house

Part Two Use street view
  1. Search the map for “usa”
  2. On the map click “street view” to reveal locations (camera icons)
  3. Zoom in on New York and click the camera on NYC
  4. In street view move the “person icon” onto one of the blue lines
  5. Street view will open, use the navigation tools to move in street view
  6. Search the map for “golden gate bridge” and use street view to “walk” across the bridge

Part Three Create a Google Map Scavenger Hunt

Your scavenger hunt should involve locations, buildings, streets, objects, natural resources that are relevant to your lesson or subject. A scavenger hunt is not a web quest and involves far less preparation. You only need a list of relevant items that can be found on Google maps. Use the list to create clues that students can use to search Google maps.

Be creative! Have fun!
